Step 2: Get to Know the Exam

Previously in 'Step 1 Online' we looked at the exercises and information available here on ieltspeaking.co.uk. If you have any questions, please get in touch. vocabularyQ1: There are 3 sections to the Speaking test.
Q2: Yes. The Speaking test is identical for both the Academic and the General exam.
Q3: Yes. The Speaking test is recorded.
Q4: The test lasts between 11-14 minutes.
Section 1: 4-5 minutes.
Section 2: 3-4 minutes
Section 3: 4-5 minutes
Q5: The first section is an interview during which the examiner asks you very general questions to give you the chance to talk about yourself. In the second section you are required to talk on a subject for between 1-2 minutes. In the third and final section the examiner will ask you questions on the topic from section 2.
Q6: You do the test on your own.
Q7: During the Section 1 'interview' the examiner will ask you simple 'getting-to-know' you questions.
Q8: In the Section 2 'long turn' you are required to speak for between 1-2 minutes on your own. The examiner will give you a card with the instructions for your talk. At the end of your talk the examiner will ask you a question or two about the topic.
Q9: Yes. You are given 1 minute to prepare what you are going to say and you can make notes.
Q10: Yes. During the Section 3 'discussion' the examiner will ask you questions on the same topic you talked about in Section 2.
Q11: The examiner will not explain the meaning of words or phrases in Section 1 or 2. However, because Section 3 is designed to be a discussion between you and the examiner, you are able to ask for an explanation.
Q12: No. The examiner is not permitted to discuss the test with you.
